Any PC with spare capacity and capable of running Java can be used to provide a MobiComp IR Beacon.
- Check if a recent JRE (1.3 or later) is installed and path is configured to use it.
- Open a command window and type 'java -version'. If command not found, check path.
- If JRE present, try not to upgrade, it may be being used for the PCs main purpose.
- If necessary, download and install JRE from java.sun.com
- Install MobiComp as follows:
- Create a directory C:\Program Files\MobiComp
- copy context.jar, Context.properties and runirbeacon.bat to Program Files\MobiComp\
- edit runirbeacon.bat and set the final parameter to the appropriate VisitorGuide URL
- copy runirbeacon.bat to the startup section of the start menu
- right-click on the copy of runirbeacon in the startup section and select properties, then set it to start minimised.
- Plug in an IR USB dongle
- run the runirbeacon script
- test with each of the PDAs - it may be necessary to go through a tedious process of letting windows install an IR dial-up modem the first time it encounters each new PDA!
