Device Settings
The following assume a new device, or one that has been reset to factory condition.
- 4150 - press power and calendar (button 1) together with reset.
- 2490/2790 - press power, calendar (button 1) and email (button 3) together with reset.
Do NOT connect the ipaq to a PC using ActiveSync until the setup has been completed.
Disable all but the iTask task switcher (iPAQ only):
Settings/Personal/Buttons
- Button 1 - <None>
- Button 2 - <None>
- Button 3 - <None>
- Button 4 - iTask
- Button 5 - <None> - but see below, #Software_Installation if device uses Socket RFID reader.
- The Hold Button 1-4 settings may also be disabled if required.
Set the owner details:
Settings/Personal/Owner Information.
- Fill in appropriate details. Our devices usually have the following:
- Name - MobiComp
- Company - University of Kent
- Address - Computing Laboratory / Canterbury / CT2 7NF / UK
- Telephone -
- E-mail - n.s.ryan@kent.ac.uk
Simplify the 'Today' screen:
Settings/Personal/Today
- Appearance - Windows Default
- Items - uncheck all except Date and Owner Info, uncheck Display Today screen if... or Today timeout. On IPAQs also check TodayPanel, this gives a summary of battery, memory and backlight status. On other devices, enable any available similar item.
Simplify Start Menu:
Settings/Personal/Menus
- uncheck everything except Internet Explorer and IPAQ Wireless
- if there is a New Menu tab, uncheck Turn onNew button menu.
Set the device name:
Settings/System/About/Device ID
- Choose a suitable device name. We use MobiCompmmmm_nn (where mmmm is the model number, e.g. 4150 or 2490, and nn is a two digit number starting from 01 and different for each example of the model, e.g. MobiComp4150_01 or MobiComp2490_03)
Power settings:
Settings/System/Backlight
- Battery Power - Turn off backlight if device is not used for 3 min.
- External Power - uncheck Turn off backlight if device is not used for...
- Brightness - On Battery - about 70%, On External - 100%
Settings/System/Power
- Standby/Standby period (if present) - 72 hours
- Advanced - uncheck both Turn off device... boxes
- USB Charging: enable either slow or fast charge
Clock:
Settings/System/Clock
- Set Home timezone, time and date as appropriate for location.
Regional Settings:
Settings/System/Regional Settings
- Set to English (United Kingdom) then reboot as instructed.
Bluetooth Settings:
Settings/Connections/Bluetooth (Windows Mobile v5) or tap Bluetooth icon at bottom right of Today screen and select Bluetooth Settings (PocketPC 2003)
- Accessibility
- Name - use same name as previously set for device.
- check Allow other devices to connect
- check Paired devices only
- check Other devices can discover me
- Services
- File Transfer - uncheck Enable service
- Information exchange - uncheck Enable service
- Serial Port - check Enable service and Authorization required, uncheck others
- If you intend using a Bluetooth serial device such as a GPS receiver, make a note of the outbound serial port number. In WM5, this is shown by pressing the Advanced button.
- Dial-Up Networking - uncheck Enable service
- Personal Network Server (if available) - uncheck Enable service
- Audio Gateway (if available) - uncheck Enable service
Now turn Bluetooth ON.
Software Installation
Connect the PDA to PC using ActiveSync.
- Install J9 Java Runtime: IBM PPRO10
If the device is to be used with a Socket RFID reader:
- Install Socket SocketScan Software
- In Settings/Personal/Buttons set Button 5 to SocketScan
WiFi
If required, turn on WiFi and connect to your local network.
